The Painted City
When the Wall came down, whole blocks of the centre were suddenly empty — unclaimed buildings, open courtyards and no landlord to call the police. Hirschfeld’s Berlin
Magnus Hirschfeld opened the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft in Tiergarten in 1919 — the first institution of its kind anywhere, with a research library that was hauled into the street and burned in 1933. Potsdam is closer to Berlin than most of Berlin.
